The clients residing at the basement of a five-floor building asked for a garden they could use year-round.

The limestone seating area formed by sharp angles in this narrow rectangular garden was designed by Anouska Hempel and Rezzan Benardete. The pergola features a skylight made of galvanized iron frame and plexiglass which is a design element as much as it is a requirement for the survival of the planting. A curtain is added for when privacy is sought.

The soft landscaping is made of differing shades of green that tolerate low light conditions. Differing-sized planters were fitted on low retaining walls , which frame the area with a living screen. The custom-made galvanize iron trellis on which climbing plants are set provide a green backdrop and screen the wall of the building next to the seating area. The hedge plants on the opposite side rise as a green wall hiding the parking lot behind it.

Evergreen planting was preferred to allow for year-round use and commissioned mattresses and cushions complement the welcoming atmosphere of the space.
