This garden, belonging to a basement-level flat, is located at the back of a five-floor apartment building. The limestone hardscaping was designed by Anouska Hempel and Rezzan Benardete.
Privacy from the upstairs neighbours was a key concern for the clients, prompting the later addition of a pergola to the previous design. Given the garden's confined setting, an enclosed roof risked feeling claustrophobic; the pergola was therefore designed to offer privacy when needed, while still allowing a view of the sky.
Evergreen planting and a bespoke trellis, designed for the garden, were used to block unwanted views without reducing the garden's already limited space.
